The sequel seems to be continuing the first game’s focus on gorgeous vistas and detailed environments, even if the narrative has moved to new locations. From what players have seen of A Plague Tale: Requiem’s gameplay so far, some time has passed since gamers last encountered the troubled pair of siblings. However, many will wonder just how long it’s been since the first game, and what could have happened in the meantime before the story picks back up in A Plague Tale: Requiem.

A New Chapter

At the end of the last game, Hugo’s powers have been fully awakened and he and Amicia have overcome their differences to take down the dastardly Vitalis together. Despite the apparent disappearance of both the rats and the plague after Vitalis’ defeat, many still remain wary of Hugo and his newly-realized powers. Life may have returned to normal for some, but siblings Amicia and Hugo, their ailing mother Beatrice, and Laurentius’ young apprentice Lucas leave in search of a new home.

A Plague Tale: Requiem maintains the first game’s action-adventure and survival horror stealth gameplay but moves the narrative to a new location. Six months after the end of A Plague Tale: Innocence, Amicia and her companions have traveled to Southern France to search for an answer to Hugo’s affliction. The months between games have been taken up with their journey, but they’re also battling the emergence of Hugo’s powers while Amicia deals with her traumatic experiences during A Plague Tale: Innocence.

Finding An Answer

With Hugo’s powers trailing death and destruction in their wake once more, Amicia must find a cure for his curse before it’s too late. Believing the answer to be on a prophesized island off the coast of Southern France, the siblings have journeyed to warmer climes to try and find the truth. Although there are still darker elements to the game and a return to the horror of the hordes of rats, A Plague Tale: Requiem has shown off its colorful and vibrant environments in its trailers, demonstrating a shift in aesthetics. The sequel seems to be building on many of the aspects of the first game, developing the stealth sections and peppering these among impressive set pieces to really blow fans out of the water.

Hugo and Amicia will still be facing off against Inquisition soldiers and other foes, but Hugo himself will also pose a very real threat as he struggles to control his own powers. With Amicia grappling with her own mental health and still determined to save her brother whatever the cost, A Plague Tale: Requiem is setting the scene for another heartbreaking and emotional experience. The environments look more varied, some sea-faring gameplay will be introduced, and there will be new characters to help or hinder the siblings along the way, but A Plague Tale: Requiem looks like it will be wholeheartedly embracing the spirit of the first game in all the best ways.

A Plague Tale: Requiem releases on October 18, 2022 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
