In a video released through IGN, Krasinski walked through the making of the critical opening scene of A Quiet Place 2, where the main character Evelyn (Emily Blunt) is trying to drive her children out of town only to encounter an action-packed series of runaway vehicles and the terrifying sound hunting creatures. The video captures everything that went into this scene, as well as some of Krasinski’s main goals in making the film.

Krasinski explains that a primary way to achieve realistic fear in A Quiet Place 2 was to shoot everything in “a one-shot or very few cuts” so that the audience feels that they are in the perspective of the characters in the film. In the anxiety-inducing opening shot of the film, Krasinski explains that he wanted the car Evelyn is driving to be a part of the action versus the action just happening to the car or around the car. To achieve this, the filmmakers used an incredible device built around the car in order to film the scene. The contraption was built in around five and a half weeks, Krasinski says, a very short time to build something so intricate.

The car contraption was almost too perfect in some respects, with Krasinski telling the crew responsible for controlling the car remotely that they were driving the vehicle too straight and not realistic enough for an average driver panicking. When the crew was ready to film the first scene of A Quiet Place 2, Krasinski expected to run through a few rehearsals of the intense scene. However, Blunt wanted to do the scene in just one take so that she could have a raw reaction to everything going on around her. Blunt claimed that it was one of the “easiest” acting gigs she has ever had since the set produced so much fear and anxiety in her, naturally.

Krasinski jokes that Blunt was genuinely fearing for her life, “so that’s what I offer as a husband.” A Quiet Place and its sequel are a part of the hand full of films Krasinski has directed.

The two horror films have become instant classics and show off Krasinski’s talents at their peak. With Krasinski’s mixed background in working on a variety of genres as actor, writer, and producer, it is any ones guess what he might be up to next now that the upcoming A Quiet Place 3 has a new director.

A Quiet Place 2 is now available on Paramount Plus.
