This will be the first game in the entire Yakuza series to get a story expansion, so there is a lot of excitement as well as skepticism regarding its existence. Just last week, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio released a new story trailer for Lost Judgment that focused on the plot and the characters that will be a part of the game’s central mystery. Some fans were afraid that this DLC might feature content that was cut from the main game, and the mysteries shown in the trailer above would have a lot of loose ends. This new announcement was perhaps aimed at quelling those fears.

In a tweet, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has confirmed that fans will be able to play as Masaharu Kaito, Yagami’s friend and partner, in the story DLC for Lost Judgment. Aptly named The Kaito Files, this add-on will let players see the world through his perspective, and perhaps get access to a completely new and fresh move-set. While Kaito played a big role in the story and combat encounters of the original game, fans could only execute team-attacks with him and Yagami. The Kaito Files is currently scheduled to release in Spring 2022 and offers around 10 hours of content.
Since Kaito was a member of a Yakuza clan, it will be interesting to see how Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio manages to make him feel unique and different from other characters in the Yakuza series. The Tweet also goes on to detail the Detective Essentials Pack as well as the School Stories Expansion Pack that will be a part of the Deluxe edition of the game. The former will be available at launch while the latter releases on October 26. The Ultimate edition includes The Kaito Files in addition to all of the content from the Deluxe edition.
It should be noted that the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions for Lost Judgment release 3 days before its official release date. Needless to say, The Kaito Files is the main draw, and anyone who wishes to get all of the content for Lost Judgment should consider getting the Ultimate edition. But fans can also choose to wait for the DLC to launch and buy it next year after more gameplay footage has been revealed. As of today, it does not seem like The Kaito Files will be available as a stand-alone product.
Lost Judgment releases on September 24 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
