Van Gaal was appointed the new United manager on Monday after drawn out negotiations and immediately claimed that he can restore the Red Devils’ dominance of the Premier League once again, after a disappointing seventh-place finish under the stewardship of David Moyes.
Ferguson had famously intended to retire from management in 2002 before going back on his decision and continuing in his post for a further 11 years, and Van Gaal has suggested that he could have followed him back then, whilst revealing a long-term friendship with the Scotsman.
Van Gaal told reporters, “I’ll probably go and get a drink with him (Ferguson). We have done so quite often in the past. We like each other.
“In fact, I would have followed him ten years ago when he wanted to quit, where he eventually came back.
“I don’t mind if he goes to games. I put more pressure on myself than others ever could do. So I do not expect any problems with Ferguson.”
Manchester United created 387 chances this season, with 37 of those ending in a goal assist.
